The Lion King (2019)
Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub's arrival. Scar, Mufasa's brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba's exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.
What people think about The Lion King
What makes The Lion King (2019) worth your time is the sheer audacity of its craft: Jon Favreau turns a beloved animated classic into a photoreal, big-screen nature epic, where every blade of grass and glint of sunlight feels painstakingly alive. The story lands with mythic weight and family-friendly clarity—equal parts awe, heartbreak, and hope—while the music and humor (especially with John Oliver’s crisp comic timing) keep it buoyant when it needs to. It’s a grand, immersive ride that plays like a modern fable carved into the savanna, best experienced loud and large. If you’re deeply attached to the expressive, hand-drawn charm of the original, this more naturalistic approach may feel cooler—but as a visual spectacle with a timeless emotional engine, it’s hard to resist.
Jon Favreau’s The Lion King (2019) is clearly aiming to reintroduce a beloved story to a new generation with jaw-dropping, photorealistic visuals and a prestige voice cast. The problem is that the realism often drains the characters of expressiveness, so moments that should hit hard can feel oddly muted and emotionally distant. If you’re hoping for the spark, warmth, and musical energy of the original, this can come off as a polished but lifeless copy with pacing that feels heavier than it needs to. Worth it if you mainly want a technical showcase and don’t mind a more restrained, less animated vibe—but if heart and personality are your priorities, you may leave disappointed.
