Possum (2018)

Possum is the rare horror-thriller that doesn’t rely on shocks so much as it seeps into your nerves, turning damp hallways, dead fields, and a single grotesque puppet into a full-body unease you can’t quite shake. Matthew Holness directs with a painter’s eye for rot and silence, and the film’s oppressive visuals and droning, haunted score feel like they’re closing in around Sean Harris, who gives a raw, inward performance that’s as mesmerizing as it is difficult to watch. It plays like a grim, dreamlike character study where every frame suggests a history the characters can barely name, and that restraint is exactly what makes it so potent. Possum is aiming for a slow, suffocating descent into trauma and guilt, using grim visuals, oppressive sound design, and Sean Harris’s haunted performance to keep you trapped in Philip’s head. The catch is that it’s deliberately repetitive and minimalist, with long stretches of dread and very little conventional plot movement, so if you need momentum, clear answers, or frequent scares, it can feel like an endurance test.
