Madame (2017)

Madame is the kind of Paris-set comedy-drama that feels like a flute of champagne with a sting in it: light, sparkling, and quietly sharp about the games people play to protect their status. Amanda Sthers stages the dinner-party premise like a social magic trick, then lets it bloom into a roaming, romantic farce through gorgeous city streets, where every glance and fib carries a little more weight than expected. The real pleasure is watching Toni Collette’s tightly wound hostess try to keep control while Rossy de Palma steals scenes with a warm, sly humanity that makes the satire land without turning cruel. It’s not for viewers who want big plot twists or broad slapstick, and it does brush up against adult themes, but if you’re on the fence, come for the chic charm and stay for the unexpectedly tender bite beneath it.

Madame is clearly aiming for a chic Parisian satire about class, desire, and the messy lies rich people tell themselves, with a Cinderella setup meant to turn bittersweet. The problem is the script often settles for predictable beats and dated attitudes, so what should feel sharp and provocative can come off trite, with characters who are more grating than intriguing. If you need romance you can root for or comedy with real bite, this may feel like a glossy exercise in watching unpleasant people behave badly and then call it sophistication. That said, the cast (especially Toni Collette and Rossy de Palma) brings enough presence to keep it watchable in patches, and the Paris setting does some heavy lifting if you’re simply in the mood for elegant scenery and low-stakes drama.
