Kin (2018)
A young boy finds a powerful otherworldly weapon, which he uses to save his older adoptive brother from a crew of thugs. Before long, the two of them are also pursued by federal agents and mysterious mercenaries aiming to reclaim their asset.
What people think about Kin
Kin is the kind of scrappy, big-hearted sci-fi thriller that sneaks up on you: it starts on the cracked sidewalks of Detroit and suddenly opens a doorway to something bigger, stranger, and beautifully pulpy. What makes it work isn’t just the otherworldly weapon or the sleek flashes of future-tech, but the bruised, believable bond between two adoptive brothers—Myles Truitt brings a soulful gravity, and Jack Reynor gives the film its restless, charismatic spark. The vibe is part gritty crime chase, part coming-of-age road run, with federal heat on one side and mysterious mercenaries on the other, all moving at a brisk, tension-forward clip. It’s not for everyone—there’s some rough-edged violence and a few sleazier moments—but if you like your science fiction grounded in emotion and atmosphere, Kin delivers a surprisingly affecting ride.
Kin is clearly trying to mash up a gritty brothers-on-the-run crime thriller with a sleek sci-fi mystery, and on paper that’s a fun, pulpy combo. The problem is it rarely blends into one satisfying movie: the tone keeps wobbling between heartfelt family drama, generic thug chase scenes, and sci-fi teases that feel more like a trailer for a bigger story than a payoff in this one. Pacing can be clunky, with long stretches of familiar plotting punctuated by bursts of cool tech, and the emotional beats don’t always land because the script feels mechanical. If you’re happy to watch for the moody atmosphere, a strong central kid performance, and a few striking weapon/action moments, you might be fine—but if you want tight storytelling or a self-contained sci-fi thriller, this will likely leave you annoyed.
