Lemon (2017)

Lemon is the kind of small, sharply observed comedy-drama that turns secondhand embarrassment into something oddly illuminating, finding real wit in the moments most movies rush past. Its humor is tart and unapologetically awkward, but there’s a precise intelligence behind the absurdity—each cringe-laced exchange feels like it’s poking at bigger truths about ego, loneliness, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. The film’s unique vision and inventive dialogue give it the snap of satire without losing sight of the bruised human being at the center. It won’t be for everyone—if you dislike discomfort comedy or characters who make you squirm, you may resist it—but if you’re game for something darkly funny and quietly insightful, it’s a surprisingly bracing watch.

Lemon is aiming for an offbeat, cringe-comedy character study about a man whose life is quietly imploding, using awkwardness and emotional discomfort as the main flavor. The problem is it leans so hard into that sour, deliberately abrasive tone that Isaac can feel less “flawed human” and more “person you’re stuck with,” which makes the slow pacing and loose structure feel even longer. If you need a likable lead, clear momentum, or jokes that land more than they squirm, this will probably test your patience. That said, if you enjoy deadpan indie weirdness and can tolerate an intentionally grating protagonist in exchange for a few sharp observations and committed performances, you might find it oddly compelling.
