Antiporno is special because it takes the language of erotic cinema and turns it inside out, using Sion Sono’s fearless style to interrogate who holds power, who performs, and who gets consumed by the gaze. It plays like a feverish chamber piece—part psychological duel, part hall-of-mirrors mystery—where bright, theatrical visuals and sudden shifts in reality keep you alert and slightly off-balance in the best way. Ami Tomite and Mariko Tsutsui commit completely, making the film’s cruelty and vulnerability feel less like shock for its own sake and more like a provocation with teeth. That said, the explicit nudity and masochistic themes are intense, so it isn’t for everyone—but if you can handle discomfort in service of a bold, self-aware critique, it’s an unforgettable watch.

Antiporno is Sion Sono swinging for a loud, confrontational meta-drama about sex, power, performance, and what “freedom” even means for women in a commodified culture. When it works, it’s visually striking and committed, with fearless performances and a deliberately artificial, stage-like intensity that makes the film feel like a feverish art installation. But it’s also the kind of movie that confuses volume for depth: the ideas are hammered home with repetition, the pacing can feel frantic, and the provocation (heavy nudity, cruelty, masochistic dynamics) can start to read as self-important rather than illuminating. If you’re not already on Sono’s wavelength—or you want nuance, emotional grounding, or a mystery that actually builds instead of looping—this may feel pretentious and exhausting rather than daring.
