What people think about Girl in the Box
Girl in the Box is the rare true-crime drama that understands the difference between exploiting suffering and honoring survival, telling Colleen Stan’s story with a steady sense of dignity and restraint. Addison Timlin gives a quietly powerful performance that makes the film less about sensational shocks and more about the terrifying, incremental ways control can be built—and the hard-won strength it takes to reclaim yourself. Director Stephen Kemp keeps the tone tense and claustrophobic without turning the ordeal into lurid spectacle, while the dynamics between the captors add an unsettling, human-scaled realism. It’s a difficult watch with heavy subject matter, so it’s not for everyone, but if you want a serious, respectful portrayal of endurance and escape, it’s compelling and worth your time.
Girl in the Box is clearly aiming to dramatize a horrific real-life survival story with a focus on endurance and psychological control rather than thriller-style twists. The problem is it often feels like a restrained TV-movie version of material that’s anything but restrained: the pacing can be sluggish, the storytelling smooths over or alters details in ways that may frustrate anyone expecting a faithful account, and the villainy isn’t always as chillingly convincing as the subject demands. That said, Addison Timlin gives the film a human center and the movie does convey the long, grinding nature of captivity without turning it into slick entertainment. If you’re sensitive to sexual violence and prolonged abuse, or you want the most accurate and complete telling of Colleen Stan’s case, you may be better served by a documentary or a more rigorous true-crime adaptation.
