Freaky Ali (2016)

Freaky Ali is the kind of underdog comedy that sneaks up on you: a scrappy, street-smart guy wandering into a polished, privileged world and somehow making it his own. The real pleasure is watching Nawazuddin Siddiqui turn a potentially silly premise into something irresistibly likable, playing Ali with a loose-limbed charm and comic timing that keeps the movie buoyant even when it gets broad. It’s light, witty, and happily colloquial, with romance and laughs that feel designed for a relaxed evening rather than a deep think-piece. If you’re in the mood for big-hearted, easygoing fun—and you enjoy seeing a great actor elevate every scene—this one earns its swings.

Freaky Ali is clearly aiming for a breezy underdog rom-com where a rough-around-the-edges guy crashes the elite world of golf and somehow wins hearts along the way. The problem is the story plays out exactly as you expect, with jokes and situations that can feel dated and stretched thin, especially once the novelty of the premise wears off. Direction and pacing don’t help, and the second half in particular tends to sag, making the whole thing feel like a missed opportunity for the cast. If you enjoy broad, old-school Bollywood-style comedy and don’t mind a flimsy plot, you might still find it mildly entertaining, but if you want sharp writing or a satisfying payoff, this likely isn’t worth your time.
