Padmaavat (2018)

Padmaavat is the kind of grand-scale historical romance that reminds you why we go to the movies: to be overwhelmed by beauty, music, and emotion so vivid it feels carved into stone. Sanjay Leela Bhansali stages medieval India like a living mural—opulent costumes, candlelit palaces, and battle-torn vistas captured with sweeping cinematography that makes every frame feel deliberate—while Deepika Padukone brings regal poise and quiet fire to Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor grounds the film with honor-bound restraint, and Ranveer Singh is mesmerizingly volatile as Khilji, a villain you can’t look away from. The tone is operatic and intense, balancing romance with looming dread, and it builds a sense of inevitability that’s both stirring and tragic without relying on cheap thrills. It’s not for viewers who want subtle minimalism or who are sensitive to depictions of war and the film’s mature, culturally specific climax, but if you’re on the fence and crave cinematic spectacle with strong performances and a beating dramatic heart, this is a feast.

Padmaavat is clearly trying to be a sweeping, operatic historical romance about pride, obsession, and honor, and on a purely visual level it often delivers with lavish sets, costumes, and Bhansali’s signature grandeur. The problem is it’s a long sit, and the pacing can feel like the film is admiring itself more than moving the story forward, which makes the emotional beats hit softer than they should. If you’re allergic to regressive, patriarchal ideas being treated as noble tradition, or you want nuanced politics rather than broad-stroke mythmaking, this may frustrate you despite the star power. That said, Ranveer Singh’s ferocity and the film’s scale can be compelling if you’re in the mood for spectacle over subtlety and can handle the heavy themes and grim climax.
