Possessor (2020)

Possessor is the rare sci-fi thriller that feels genuinely dangerous: a sleek, nightmarish idea executed with the confidence of a filmmaker who knows exactly how far to push your comfort zone. Brandon Cronenberg directs with icy precision, turning corporate assassination and mind-hijacking into a hypnotic descent where identity becomes slippery and every frame seems to hum with dread. Andrea Riseborough is astonishingly controlled at the center, while Christopher Abbott brings a wounded, human volatility that makes the film’s psychological tug-of-war feel painfully intimate. Fair warning: it’s brutally graphic and unapologetically disturbing, but if you can handle hard-R body horror in service of a bold, original vision, this one lingers like a bad dream you can’t stop replaying.

Possessor is aiming for a cold, high-concept sci‑fi horror about identity erosion and corporate cruelty, and it commits hard to that bleak, clinical vibe. The problem is that the story can feel more murky than mysterious—some plot logic is fuzzy, the pacing is deliberately slow, and you may find yourself admiring the concept more than being pulled along by the narrative. It’s also unapologetically graphic, with body horror and violence that aren’t there for cheap thrills so much as to make you squirm, which means if you’re squeamish or just not in the mood for something nasty, this will be a bad time. Still, Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott are intensely watchable, and the film’s unsettling imagery and atmosphere will absolutely land if you like cerebral, punishing genre work that prioritizes mood over clarity.
