Asura: The City of Madness (2016)

Asura: The City of Madness is the kind of crime thriller that grabs you by the collar and never loosens its grip, plunging you into a neon-stained world where every favor has a price and every handshake feels like a threat. Kim Sung-soo stages the corruption like a full-contact sport, with a sharp, nasty script and a relentless pace that turns moral compromise into its own kind of suspense. Jung Woo-sung gives the film its bruised human center, while Hwang Jung-min is electrifying as a mayor who radiates charm and menace in the same breath, making each scene crackle with danger. It’s brutally violent and gleefully over-the-top at times, so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you want a hardboiled, high-voltage descent into civic rot, this one delivers.

Asura: The City of Madness is clearly aiming for a no-clean-hands, pressure-cooker crime saga where everyone’s compromised and the system is rotten to the core. It delivers on that with ferocious performances and a relentless, sweaty energy, but the story can get tangled enough that you may stop caring who’s double-crossing whom. The violence is frequent and nasty, and after a while the escalating bloodshed risks tipping from “hard-hitting” into “are we supposed to take this seriously?” territory. If you need a moral anchor, a clever plot you can easily track, or even a sliver of hope, this one will feel like two hours in a dark alley; if you’re up for mean, chaotic Korean noir powered by intensity, it’ll hit the spot.
