Sandy Wexler (2017)

Sandy Wexler is the kind of shaggy, oddly endearing comedy that sneaks up on you: a broad, goofy Adam Sandler character study that keeps finding little pockets of heart. Its charm comes from the contrast between Sandy’s outsized, hapless persona and the genuine sweetness that emerges once he finally has someone worth believing in, giving the movie a warmer, more romantic glow than you might expect. The vibe is unapologetically silly and a bit old-school, but there’s an earnestness underneath that makes it feel like a mild step up from Sandler’s more cynical Netflix outings. It won’t convert Sandler skeptics who can’t stand his louder quirks, but if you’re on the fence and open to something unique, likable, and surprisingly tender, it’s an easy watch.

Sandy Wexler is clearly trying to be a goofy, big-hearted throwback about an oddball talent manager finally stumbling into something real, and you can feel the affection for showbiz weirdos underneath it. The problem is it’s stretched far past its natural runtime, with pacing that drags and jokes that too often land with a thud, making the whole thing feel more like a loose collection of bits than a proper comedy. A parade of cameos shows up to keep things moving, but it can come off as distraction rather than entertainment, and the overall vibe leans lazy instead of sharp. If you enjoy Sandler’s rambling, character-driven comedies and don’t mind sitting through a lot of filler for a few warm moments, you might be fine; if you want tight writing and consistent laughs, this probably isn’t your night.
