Marrowbone is aiming for a gothic, grief-soaked mystery where the “haunted house” is really a pressure cooker for trauma and family loyalty, and you can feel the director reaching for something emotionally devastating. The problem is it often plays more like a twisty melodrama than a sharp thriller: the characters aren’t given quite enough depth, the plot keeps piling on complications, and the scares are more moody than genuinely frightening.
