Brad's Status (2017)

20171h 41mRComedyDrama

Although Brad has a satisfying career, a sweet wife and a comfortable life in suburban Sacramento, things aren't quite what he imagined during his college glory days. When he accompanies his musical prodigy son on a university tour, he can't help comparing his life with those of his four best college friends who seemingly have more wealthy and glamorous lives. But when circumstances force him to reconnect with his former friends, Brad begins to question whether he has really failed or if their lives are actually more flawed than they appear.

Explained

What people think about Brad's Status

Brad’s Status is special because it turns that quiet, nagging feeling of “Is this all there is?” into something sharply funny, painfully human, and ultimately disarming, with Mike White’s writing catching the small humiliations of comparison the way a good mirror catches bad lighting. Ben Stiller gives one of his best dramatic performances, letting Brad’s anxious inner monologue ricochet between comedy and ache, while Austin Abrams grounds the film with a son who’s talented, observant, and not interested in his dad’s self-mythology. The vibe is wry and intimate—more bittersweet character study than big crowd-pleaser—and it sneaks in real tenderness as the father-son trip becomes a reckoning with privilege, envy, and what “success” actually feels like from the inside. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to cringe, strong language, or a protagonist who can be self-absorbed, but if you’ve ever measured your life against someone else’s highlight reel, this one lands with surprising grace.
