Wet Woman in the Wind (2016)

Wet Woman in the Wind is the kind of movie that grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go, a slyly comic, surprisingly buoyant romance-drama that turns a quiet countryside retreat into a delirious battle of wills. Akihiko Shiota directs with a mischievous, jaunty rhythm, letting the playful score and a wonderfully game ensemble keep the tone light even as the emotions spike into something rawer and more volatile. Yuki Mamiya’s Shiori is an unstoppable force of charisma—funny, brazen, and oddly disarming—while Tasuku Nagaoka plays her would-be hermit foil with the weary precision of a man losing an argument he didn’t want to have. Fair warning: it’s explicitly sexual with frequent nudity and multiple sex scenes, so it’s not for the prudish, but if you can meet it on its own shameless wavelength, it’s eccentric, energetic, and hard not to enjoy.

Wet Woman in the Wind is aiming for a cheeky, provocative battle-of-the-sexes comedy-drama, with a burnt-out playwright trying to disappear and a relentless young woman refusing to let him. The problem is that what’s meant to feel playful can land as sexist and sour, especially with the film’s heavy reliance on nudity and explicit sex that often reads more like provocation than insight. It also tends to run out of steam once it hits its big turning point, leaving you with a lot of lingering scenes but not much emotional payoff. If you’re not in the mood for a deliberately “pinky” art-house vibe where sexuality is the main engine and the politics are questionable, this will likely feel more irritating than daring, though the leads do bring committed energy to the push-and-pull.
