The Stakelander (2016)

The Stakelander earns its keep by marrying lean, forward-thrusting action to a dusty, post-apocalyptic vampire western vibe—grim, scrappy, and surprisingly soulful when it counts. Dan Berk and Robert Olsen keep the film moving with the confidence of filmmakers who know that momentum is a form of storytelling, letting brutal set pieces and tense escapes reveal character rather than pause for speeches. Connor Paolo’s battered determination plays beautifully off Nick Damici’s weathered, mythic hunter presence, giving the carnage a human pulse even as the movie delivers satisfyingly gory vampire mayhem. It’s not for viewers who want elegant, romantic vampires or a gentle ride—this one is rough, bloody, and mean—but if you like your horror with attitude and your action with bite, it’s an easy recommendation.

The Stakelander is clearly aiming for a gritty, post-apocalyptic vampire road sequel that trades big mythology for survivalist momentum, and it does have a few solid scraps of atmosphere and a welcome return to Nick Damici’s weary, no-nonsense hunter. The problem is it often feels like it’s replaying beats from the first film without the same tension or emotional punch, so the action and horror come off functional rather than gripping. The pacing can sag between attacks, and some set pieces land flatter than they should, which makes the whole thing feel more like “another chapter” than a must-see continuation. If you’re here mainly for bleak genre vibes, practical violence, and a rough-edged mentor/protégé dynamic, you’ll get enough to pass the time; if you want the first film’s impact, sharper suspense, or fresher ideas, this one may disappoint.
