What people think about Call of Heroes
Call of Heroes is the kind of old-school, crowd-pleasing action thriller that reminds you how exhilarating a well-defended town, a looming siege, and a clear moral line can be when they’re staged with real craft. Benny Chan directs with muscular confidence, letting Sammo Hung’s fight choreography do the storytelling—clean, kinetic, and satisfyingly physical—while the momentum barely gives you time to breathe. Sean Lau brings grounded authority to the resistance, Louis Koo makes a villain you can’t look away from, and Eddie Peng adds a restless spark that turns the film into more than just a series of brawls. It’s not for viewers who want subtle, bloodless action, but if you’re on the fence and craving a rousing wuxia-meets-western vibe with genuine stakes, this one delivers.
Call of Heroes is clearly aiming for a classic “small town stands up to a monster” siege thriller, with Benny Chan leaning hard into old-school Hong Kong action energy and big moral stakes. The problem is the story is pretty paint-by-numbers, and the characters often feel like loud archetypes rather than people, so the drama can come off as forced and occasionally overplayed. If you need smart plotting, layered motivations, or surprises, this will likely feel predictable and a bit thin between set pieces. But if you’re here for gritty standoffs, punchy fights, and a satisfyingly hateful villain (Louis Koo commits), it delivers enough adrenaline to make the time go down easier.
