Mary (2019)

Mary is the kind of sea-bound horror that earns its chills the old-fashioned way: with atmosphere, credible people, and the creeping sense that the horizon has quietly vanished behind you. Michael Goi turns a vintage schooner into a floating pressure cooker, using tight camera placement and the unforgiving open water to make every corridor feel like a trap and every creak like a warning. Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer ground the story in a bruised, believable family dynamic, so the dread lands not as cheap shock but as something that threatens a real marriage, real kids, real hope. If you want elaborate mythology or wall-to-wall gore, this may feel more restrained, but if you’re in the mood for a claustrophobic, storm-lit mystery where the setting does half the haunting, Mary is a solid voyage.

Mary is clearly trying to deliver a classic “haunted vessel” slow-burn where isolation, family stress, and maritime dread tighten into full supernatural chaos, and on paper that’s a solid hook. The problem is it plays like a greatest-hits reel of familiar horror beats, with clunky writing and pacing that drifts just when it needs to build momentum, so the scares often feel more announced than earned. Even with Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer doing what they can, the execution is too messy to make the mystery satisfying or the terror memorable. If you’re craving fresh mythology or genuinely unsettling set pieces, you’ll likely be frustrated; if you just want a serviceable, stormy, late-night haunted-boat watch with a strong cast and low expectations, it might still pass the time.
