Wonder Wheel (2017)

Wonder Wheel is a movie that glows like its own neon sign: a romantic drama steeped in 1950s Coney Island atmosphere, where the lights are bright, the emotions brighter, and every glance feels like it could tip into heartbreak. Kate Winslet gives a raw, full-bodied performance as Ginny, a woman whose dreams and disappointments spill out in ways that are messy, funny, and painfully human, and the film smartly lets her volatility become the story’s weather. Vittorio Storaro’s cinematography and the lush period design turn boardwalk glamour into something almost operatic, bathing ordinary rooms in carnival color and making the setting feel like a character with its own mood swings. If you’re on the fence, know this isn’t a plot-driven thrill ride so much as an adult, talky, emotionally charged chamber piece—more about longing and self-deception than likable choices—but if you want a film that looks ravishing and hits like a bruised confession, it’s absolutely worth the ticket.

The problem is that the writing often feels loud rather than deep—characters can come off more like types than people, and the melodrama piles up until it starts to feel overwrought instead of heartbreaking. If you’re allergic to soap-operatic plotting and dialogue that strains for “big” meaning, this may play like a stylish mess rather than a satisfying drama. Still, the period atmosphere is striking and the performances (especially at the center) have real sparks, so if you enjoy showy, stage-like character pieces, you might find enough to admire even when it doesn’t fully land.
