The Nun (2018)
A priest with a dark past and a novice nearing her final vows are sent by the Vatican to Romania to investigate a nun's death and face a demonic force.
What people think about The Nun
The Nun is horror as cathedral-pageantry: a lavish, gothic haunted-house ride where every corridor seems to breathe, every candlelight flicker feels like a warning, and the Romanian abbey setting becomes a character all its own. Corin Hardy leans into grand, pulpy imagery with the confidence of a filmmaker who knows that fear can be as much about mood and spectacle as it is about shocks, and the film delivers both with a steady, ominous rhythm. Taissa Farmiga anchors the dread with a quietly compelling presence, while Demián Bichir brings weary conviction that makes the supernatural feel uncomfortably close to human guilt. If you want subtle, slow-burn psychological horror, this may feel more like a theme-park nightmare than an art-house chill—but if you’re on the fence and crave atmospheric, camp-tinged Conjuring-universe thrills, it’s an invitingly sinister ticket.
The Nun is clearly aiming for gothic, Conjuring-universe atmosphere—creepy abbeys, Catholic iconography, and a demon with a killer silhouette—and on that surface level it mostly delivers. The problem is it leans hard on loud jump scares and repetitive “walk down a corridor, something pops out” beats, so the tension feels manufactured rather than earned. The writing and logic can get wobbly, and the characters are more functional than compelling, which makes the pacing drag between the good-looking scares. If you’re here for spooky production design and a haunted-house ride vibe, you’ll probably have a decent time; if you want smart, slow-burn dread with tight storytelling, this one may waste your evening.
