With Open Arms (2017)

With Open Arms is the kind of brisk French farce that takes a lofty idea—public virtue—and pokes it until it squeaks, all while keeping the laughs coming. Christian Clavier is in prime form as a self-satisfied intellectual forced to test his own principles, and Ary Abittan brings a lively, scene-stealing spark that turns the culture-clash setup into something genuinely watchable rather than purely preachy. The movie’s pleasure is its energetic rhythm and sharp, well-timed writing: it’s less a sermon than a satirical pressure-cooker where manners, hypocrisy, and good intentions collide. It’s not for everyone—some humor leans broad and the film includes moderate sexual content, threats, and coarse language—but if you enjoy socially pointed comedies with big performances and a mischievous bite, this one delivers.
