Underwater (2020)

Underwater is a lean, breathless pressure-cooker of a movie that drops you into the ocean’s blackest depths and never lets you fully exhale, marrying sci-fi spectacle to old-school creature-feature dread. William Eubank makes the seafloor feel both vast and claustrophobic, with tactile suit design, murky visuals, and a constant sense that the environment itself is trying to kill you. Kristen Stewart anchors the chaos with a grounded, determined performance, while Vincent Cassel brings a weary authority that makes the team dynamic feel lived-in even as panic closes in. If you like your thrills fast, tense, and relentlessly atmospheric, it’s a terrific ride; if you’re hoping for lots of character backstory or slow-burn mystery, this one is more about momentum than meditation.

Underwater is trying to be a relentless, claustrophobic survival ride—basically “deep-sea disaster movie” meets creature-feature—with Kristen Stewart anchoring the panic in a no-nonsense way. It mostly delivers on momentum and atmosphere, but don’t expect much in the way of originality, character depth, or surprises; it runs on familiar sci-fi horror beats and keeps sprinting so you don’t notice how thin the story is. If you want a smart, eerie slow-burn with big ideas, this will feel loud, rushed, and a bit empty.
