Ok Jaanu (2017)

Ok Jaanu is the kind of modern Bollywood romance that feels like a breeze off Marine Drive—sunlit, musical, and quietly more tender than it first appears. Shaad Ali keeps the vibe youthful and lived-in, letting Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor’s easy chemistry sell the thrill of two ambitious people trying to love without making promises, while A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack does half the flirting for them. What elevates it is the warmth around the edges: the film’s Mumbai textures, Ravi K. Chandran’s glossy-yet-intimate cinematography, and a lovely supporting track that adds unexpected emotional weight without turning the story heavy. It’s not for viewers who want high-stakes melodrama or big plot twists, but if you’re in the mood for a sweet, stylish, city-set romance with music that lingers, it’s an easy yes.

Ok Jaanu is clearly trying to be a modern, breezy romance about two ambitious people testing love without commitment, with Mumbai energy and a warm, older-couple subplot meant to add emotional weight. The problem is it often feels like it’s going through the motions: the story beats are predictable, the dialogue can land a bit clunky, and the central chemistry doesn’t consistently sell the “can’t-stay-away” intensity the film needs. If you’re hoping for a fresh, sharply written love story or you’re sensitive to remakes that feel too faithful and less inspired, this may leave you underwhelmed. Still, it’s an easy watch with pleasant music, glossy visuals, and Leela Samson brings genuine tenderness that briefly lifts the film above its routine plotting.
