Copshop (2021)
On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station. However, when the hit man turns up at the precinct, an unsuspecting rookie cop finds herself caught in the crosshairs.
What people think about Copshop
Copshop is the kind of lean, mean genre machine that reminds you how much fun a contained setting can be when the director knows exactly how to turn it into a pressure cooker. Joe Carnahan stages the small-town police station like a boxing ring—tight, sweaty, and unpredictable—where every hallway feels like a trap and every pause hums with bad intentions. Gerard Butler brings a snarling professionalism, Frank Grillo plays slippery desperation with relish, and Alexis Louder is the secret weapon: a grounded, watchable rookie whose steadiness makes the chaos hit harder. It’s pulpy, profane, and proudly old-school in its thrills, and while the violence is very bloody and the language is constant, if you want a tense, high-energy crime ride that doesn’t waste your time, this one delivers.
Copshop is clearly aiming for a slick, pulpy “trapped-in-a-police-station” pressure cooker, with Joe Carnahan leaning into loud, nasty fun and a steady drip of tension. The problem is it rarely surprises you: the plot hits familiar beats, the characters feel more like types than people, and the tone swings between gritty and cheeky in a way that can make the stakes feel oddly weightless. If you’re hoping for a smart, twisty thriller or anything with real emotional depth, this will likely feel like noisy genre comfort food. Still, if you can tolerate severe violence and just want a tight, contained shootout movie powered by Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo’s tough-guy energy, it delivers enough momentum to kill 100 minutes.
