Dutch (2021)
James Bernard Jr., a.k.a. Dutch, has become the most dangerous criminal in New Jersey. From his early skill as a car thief, Dutch recognized the opportunity to rule the streets and he seized it. With both the protection and respect of the Mafia, Dutch becomes the most terrifying force on the streets. District Attorney Anthony Jacobs is determined to take down Dutch and his crew, and he's confident that his witnesses will testify against them.
What people think about Dutch
Dutch has the pulpy, street-lit swagger of a modern crime fable, the kind that wants you to feel the seduction of power even as the walls close in. Preston A. Whitmore II frames the story through a courtroom pressure-cooker and restless flashbacks, giving the rise-and-fall rhythm a propulsive, Iceberg Slim-like flavor without getting lost in exposition. Lance Gross is the real hook—commanding, charismatic, and volatile in a way that makes you understand why people would follow Dutch, fear him, and maybe even root for him despite themselves. It’s gritty and unapologetically violent, with heavy language and adult content, so it won’t be for everyone—but if you’re in the mood for a hard-edged gangster drama carried by a strong lead performance, it’s an easy watch to lean into.
Dutch (2021) is clearly aiming for a gritty rise-and-fall gangster saga with courtroom tension, mob loyalties, and a street-legend antihero at the center. The problem is it often plays like a low-budget imitation of better crime dramas: the dialogue is heavy-handed, the characters can feel cartoonish and stereotyped, and the performances don’t consistently sell the stakes. Despite being billed as action, there’s a lot of talking and plotting for relatively little punch, so if you’re expecting a propulsive, hard-hitting thriller, you may get restless fast. On the plus side, if you’re forgiving of rough edges and mainly want a straightforward, pulpy mob story with familiar beats, you might find it watchable enough.
