Insidious: The Last Key (2018)

Insidious: The Last Key feels special because it finally lets Lin Shaye’s Elise Rainier take center stage—not just as a paranormal pro, but as a woman confronting the kind of personal darkness that makes the supernatural hits feel uncomfortably close to home. Adam Robitel keeps the vibe brisk and dread-soaked, mixing slick, well-timed jump scares with a pulpy, nightmarish imagination that makes every hallway and doorway feel like a bad idea. What really sells it is the surprising streak of empathy running beneath the shocks: even when the movie is going for your throat, it’s also rooting for its characters to survive their pasts, not just the monsters. If you prefer slow-burn, art-house horror you may find it a bit loud and ride-like, but if you want a crowd-pleasing thriller with a strong lead and a few satisfying twists, this one delivers.

Insidious: The Last Key is clearly trying to deepen the series by giving Elise a more personal, traumatic backstory and tying the haunting to something she’s been running from her whole life. The problem is it often feels like a checklist sequel—loud jump scares, familiar “walk through the dark house” beats, and a plot that gets messy without building the kind of dread the franchise is capable of. If you’re hoping for the creeping, inventive terror of the earlier films, this one may leave you feeling like you’ve seen it all before, just noisier. Still, Lin Shaye remains a likable anchor, and a few creepy images and emotional notes land if you’re mainly here for Elise and a PG-13 haunted-house ride.
