What people think about Wheelman
Wheelman is the kind of lean, high-octane thriller that takes a simple premise and turns it into a white-knuckle experience, largely by trapping you in the driver’s seat and refusing to let up. Jeremy Rush stages the action with a slick, street-level clarity, using phone calls, headlights, and tight close-quarters tension to make the night feel like a moving maze, while Frank Grillo carries it with a bruised, determined intensity that makes every split-second decision land. The pacing is ruthlessly efficient—no wasted detours, just escalating pressure as loyalties shift and danger keeps finding the car. If you like your crime movies gritty, profane, and built like a precision engine, it’s an uncommonly smooth ride; if you need a broader story canvas or dislike heavy language, you may want to pass.
Wheelman is clearly trying to be a lean, high-concept thriller that traps you in the driver’s seat for one long, tense night, with Frank Grillo doing the grizzled, desperate-pro dad thing as well as he ever does. The problem is the movie leans hard on its gimmick—endless calls, threats, and instructions—so if you don’t enjoy being barked at by anonymous voices for 80 minutes, the tension can start to feel like noise. The plot hits plenty of familiar crime-thriller beats, and if you’re hoping for big set pieces or clever twists, it may come off more functional than fresh. Still, if you want a tight, mostly single-location adrenaline run with solid driving action and a committed lead, it can scratch that itch—just don’t expect it to be deeper than its premise.
