Show Dogs is the kind of high-concept family comedy that wins you over on sheer commitment: it takes a tough-as-nails K-9 and drops him into the lacquered, absurdly competitive world of elite dog shows, then lets the culture clash do the heavy lifting. Ludacris gives Max a gruff, funny edge, Will Arnett’s deadpan exasperation plays perfectly against the canine chaos, and the movie’s self-aware wink keeps the silliness feeling intentional rather than desperate. The vibe is bright, breezy, and a little mischievous—more Saturday-afternoon caper than heartfelt tearjerker—with enough action and goofy set pieces to keep kids engaged and adults mildly amused. It’s not for everyone (the humor can be a bit rude, and there’s a dog-show inspection gag some parents may want to know about), but if you’re in the mood for a light, low-stakes romp, it’s an easy watch.

Show Dogs is clearly trying to mash up a kid-friendly buddy-cop caper with the goofy backstage world of competitive dog shows, and on paper that’s a decent “odd couple goes undercover” setup. The problem is the execution: the jokes land with a thud more often than not, the pacing feels clunky, and the effects and character work are too flimsy to carry the story when the comedy isn’t doing its job.
