Hairspray Live! (2016)

Hairspray Live! is the rare TV event that feels like a party you’re lucky to be invited to: bright, big-hearted, and brimming with the kind of showbiz electricity that only a live musical can generate. The 1960s Baltimore setting pops with candy-colored charm while the story keeps its feet moving and its conscience awake, letting romance and comedy share the floor with a sincere push against segregation. Maddie Baillio makes Tracy an irresistibly hopeful engine of momentum, and the supporting cast—especially Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, and Harvey Fierstein—turns each number into a showcase without ever losing the ensemble joy. If you don’t like musicals or you’re sensitive to period-accurate racist language and themes, it may not be your comfort watch, but if you want a crowd-pleaser with real warmth and purpose, this one absolutely delivers.

Hairspray Live! is clearly aiming to bottle the Broadway show’s joy and big-hearted message about body positivity and racial integration, with the added adrenaline of a live TV event. When it’s working, the numbers have real energy and a few performers (especially the villainy and comedy) keep things buoyant, but the production can feel oddly uneven—like it’s still warming up while you’re already watching. Some staging and pacing choices come off as filler or slightly misguided, which dulls the story’s satirical edge compared to other Hairspray versions that land the punchlines and themes with more confidence. If you’re mainly here for a tight, polished musical or the sharpest take on the material, this may frustrate you; if you enjoy live-theater imperfections and can roll with a bumpy rhythm, it’s still a cheerful enough ride.
