Son (2021)
When a young boy contracts a mysterious illness, his mother must decide how far she will go to protect him from terrifying forces in her past.
What people think about Son
Son is the kind of horror-thriller that gets under your skin not through flashy shocks, but through a suffocating, intimate dread that feels uncomfortably real—because it’s rooted in a parent’s worst fear: your child is sick, and no one can tell you why. Ivan Kavanagh builds a chilling atmosphere where every quiet moment hums with paranoia, and Andi Matichak anchors the film with a raw, protective intensity that gives the nightmare genuine emotional weight instead of treating it like a gimmick. The vibe is grim, tense, and steadily escalating, with a sense of unseen forces closing in even when the room looks perfectly ordinary. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s severe gore and heavy themes—but if you like horror that hits both the nerves and the heart, Son delivers a nasty little jolt of resonance along with its chills.
Son wants to be a grim, maternal-protection nightmare with cult baggage and body-horror jolts, and to be fair it opens with the kind of dread that makes you lean in. The problem is it starts feeling familiar fast, repeating the “something’s wrong, no one believes her” beats until the tension goes slack and the story becomes easier to predict than it should be. When it does go hard, it’s not subtle: the violence and illness imagery are nasty, and the themes around cult abuse and sexual violence can hit like a truck, so this is absolutely not a casual Friday-night scare. If you’re here for bleak atmosphere and Andi Matichak selling desperation, you’ll get something out of it, but if you need tight pacing and fresh twists, this one may test your patience.
