F the Prom (2017)

F the Prom is a gleefully messy teen comedy with a surprisingly tender pulse: it takes the glossy mythology of high school popularity and pokes holes in it with just enough heart to make the laughs land harder. Danielle Campbell and Joel Courtney give the central friendship a lived-in, bruised chemistry, so even when the movie goes big and outrageous, you can feel the sting underneath the jokes. The vibe is mean-girls-adjacent satire with a scrappy, prank-war energy—cruelty gets called out, but the film still lets you enjoy the cathartic chaos of watching the social ladder wobble. It’s not for viewers who want a clean, wholesome prom story (the language and gross-out bits can be a lot), but if you’re in the mood for a sharp, rowdy takedown of teen status games, it’s an easy, entertaining watch.

F the Prom is clearly aiming for a snarky, anti-popularity teen comedy with a bit of heart, where the outcasts finally get to flip the script on the “perfect” kids. The problem is the writing leans on mean-spirited pranks and shocky humiliation beats in place of believable character growth, so the emotional turns can feel unearned and the “message” arrives after the movie has already indulged the behavior it’s supposedly criticizing. If you’re sensitive to bullying-as-humor, messy revenge plots, or characters making decisions that exist mainly to keep the chaos going, this will likely feel more irritating than cathartic. On the plus side, the cast has some charm and there are occasional sharp lines, but it’s the kind of teen movie that mistakes attitude for depth.
