Herman Yau keeps the energy taut and street-level, letting the tension come from colorful, distrustful factions circling each other like sharks, while Chapman To brings surprising bite and humanity to a man torn between ambition and family. Anthony Wong, as the ailing godfather, radiates weary authority; every glance suggests a lifetime of bargains, betrayals, and bad arithmetic. It’s Category III for a reason—violent, blunt, and not interested in comforting you—but if you like your crime dramas tough, character-driven, and rooted in Hong Kong’s real anxieties, this one goes down like a shot of something strong.

The Mobfathers is clearly aiming for a gritty, old-school Hong Kong triad power-struggle drama, with the “election” gimmick giving it a slightly different hook than the usual succession story. The problem is that it often feels more like a checklist of underworld beats than a deeply involving character study, so if you’re expecting the emotional weight and sharp plotting of the best Herman Yau crime films, you may find it a bit blunt and routine. Category III means the violence and sleaze aren’t coy, and if you don’t have patience for grimy, morally empty worlds where everyone double-crosses everyone, this won’t convert you.
