Doctor Sleep is the rare horror sequel that earns its existence by growing up alongside its characters, turning lingering trauma into something unexpectedly moving without giving up the chills. Mike Flanagan directs with a steady, humane touch, letting the supernatural spectacle serve a story about recovery, responsibility, and the strange grace of connection—anchored by Ewan McGregor’s quietly wounded warmth and a magnetic, dangerous Rebecca Ferguson. The vibe is elegiac and creepy rather than nonstop frenetic, with bursts of genuine terror and a fantasy-like sweep that makes the world feel expansive instead of just haunted. It’s not for everyone if you want pure, minimalist dread or are sensitive to intense violence and addiction themes, but if you’re on the fence, this one surprises by having a heart as sharp as its teeth.

Doctor Sleep is clearly trying to do the impossible: honor Kubrick’s icy nightmare while also delivering a more Stephen King–style, character-driven sequel about recovery, legacy, and psychic warfare. When it works, Mike Flanagan gives you strong performances (McGregor’s weary decency and Ferguson’s charismatic menace especially) and a few genuinely nasty moments that remind you this is still an R-rated horror film. But it’s also long, sometimes oddly procedural, and the “cult vs. superpowered teens” plotting can feel more like dark fantasy thriller than the raw, suffocating terror people associate with The Shining. If you’re coming for relentless dread and minimalist horror, you may find it talkier, more sentimental, and more reverent than scary; if you’re open to a slower, supernatural sequel with heart, it’s a solid, if uneven, time.
