Amateur (2018)
14-year-old basketball phenom Terron Forte has to navigate the under-the-table world of amateur athletics when he is recruited to an elite NCAA prep school.
What people think about Amateur
Amateur is special because it treats youth basketball not as a fairy tale of destiny, but as a high-pressure marketplace where talent gets appraised, steered, and sometimes compromised long before anyone’s old enough to vote. Ryan Koo keeps the vibe tense and grounded, letting the gym-floor realism and the small, cutting conversations do the heavy lifting, while Michael Rainey Jr. gives Terron Forte a lived-in mix of confidence and vulnerability that makes every decision feel weighty. Josh Charles and Sharon Leal add sharp, human shading to the adults circling the dream, so the film becomes less about winning games and more about what winning costs. It’s not a feel-good sports uplift and the language is frequently harsh, but if you want a drama with real insight into the machinery behind “amateur” athletics, it’s absorbing, urgent, and hard to shake.
Amateur wants to pull back the curtain on the shady, transactional side of youth basketball, and for a while it does capture the pressure-cooker reality of a kid being treated like a commodity. The problem is it keeps sanding down its own bite, drifting into a familiar “inspirational sports drama” lane where the plot turns feel predictable and the pacing can flatten out just when you want it to get messier and more specific. If you’re hoping for a hard-hitting, uncompromising takedown of the system, this may feel too safe and conventional by the end. Still, Michael Rainey Jr. brings sincerity to Terron, and the film’s atmosphere and language (including frequent strong profanity) make the world feel lived-in even when the storytelling plays it safe.
