The Shape of Water (2017)

Guillermo del Toro directs with painterly confidence, turning a secret government lab and a modest apartment into places of aching beauty, while Sally Hawkins gives a wordless performance so expressive you’ll swear you can hear her thoughts. The vibe is tender, strange, and deeply compassionate—part love story, part creature feature, part hymn for outsiders—anchored by a deliciously unsettling turn from Michael Shannon and warm humanity from Richard Jenkins. It’s not for everyone (it’s explicitly sexual and occasionally violent), but if you’re open to romance that’s genuinely imaginative and emotionally sincere, this one casts a spell.

When it works, it’s gorgeously designed and emotionally sincere, with Sally Hawkins doing quiet, expressive heavy lifting and Michael Shannon bringing real menace. But if you need tight plotting or subtle symbolism, you may find the story a bit thin, occasionally cliché, and paced like it’s drifting on vibes rather than momentum. Also, it’s unambiguously R-rated—sexual content and bursts of graphic violence aren’t garnish here—so if that’s not your lane, this will feel less “enchanting” and more “why am I watching this?”
