Wish Dragon (2021)

Wish Dragon takes a familiar wish-granting setup and makes it feel newly alive by dropping it into a vibrant, contemporary Shanghai that pops with color, bustle, and heart. What really sells it, though, is the friendship at its center and the unexpectedly tender bond between Din and the wisecracking dragon Long, voiced with terrific warmth and timing by John Cho. The movie keeps a buoyant, comedic pace with light action and a few rude jokes, but it’s anchored by a sincere, warmhearted belief that the most magical things in life can’t be bought. If you’re allergic to big, feel-good lessons, it may feel a touch sentimental—but if you want an animated adventure that’s charming, funny, and genuinely sweet, this one earns its wishes.

Wish Dragon is clearly aiming to be a warm, crowd-pleasing fairy tale about class, friendship, and learning what actually matters, wrapped in bright animation and a fast, family-friendly pace. The problem is it leans so hard on familiar “wish-granter” beats that you can often predict the next move long before the characters do, and a chunk of the comedy skews a bit loud and juvenile. If you’re hoping for a fresh fantasy adventure with surprising turns or Pixar-level emotional layering, this may feel like a competent remix rather than its own thing. Still, John Cho’s dragon brings some charm, the Shanghai setting has personality, and for kids or anyone wanting a light, harmless watch, it does the job without overstaying its welcome.
