Gukoroku - Traces of Sin (2017)
Tanaka is going through a tough time trying to support his younger sister Mitsuko, recently arrested and on hold in jail. An investigative reporter, he immerses himself into a story about a shocking murder case gone cold. The "perfect" family – successful businessman, beautiful wife and adorable child – were brutally murdered a year ago and the case remains unsolved. Tanaka interviews their friends and acquaintances, and as stories of their true nature unfold, he begins to discover that the family was not as ideal as believed.
What people think about Gukoroku - Traces of Sin
Traces of Sin is the kind of thriller that doesn’t just chase answers—it pulls you into a mood, a moral fog, and a mystery that feels like it’s seeping into the walls. Following an investigative reporter digging into a year-old family massacre while his own life is fraying, the film builds suspense with patient, mesmerizing confidence, letting small details and uneasy silences do as much work as any twist. It’s atmospheric and quietly disturbing in the best way, more interested in the human cost of truth than cheap shocks, and that’s what makes it so engaging. If you prefer fast, clean, puzzle-box mysteries, this one’s slower and heavier—but if you like your thrillers thoughtful, immersive, and haunting after the credits, it’s absolutely worth the dive.
Traces of Sin wants to be a sober, morally tangled thriller about grief, guilt, and the way a “cold case” corrodes everyone who touches it, and it mostly plays like a patient investigative drama rather than a pulse-pounder. The catch is it takes its sweet time: long stretches of interviews and methodical legwork can feel repetitive, and the runtime may start to drag if you’re waiting for constant twists. If you like slow-burn Japanese crime stories with a somber mood and a reporter piecing together ugly truths one conversation at a time, there’s real payoff in the atmosphere and performances. If you need tight pacing, frequent reveals, or a brisk mystery that gets to the point quickly, this one may test your patience.
