Rob Reiner frames the run-up to the Iraq War as a tense, methodical newsroom thriller, where James Marsden and Woody Harrelson bring urgency and lived-in credibility to the grind of chasing sources and pushing back against a roaring consensus. The film’s power comes from its granular detail and its moral clarity: it honors skepticism as a civic duty without turning its characters into saints or its story into a lecture. If you prefer your political dramas subtle or apolitical, this may feel pointed, but if you want a smart, relevant film that makes journalism feel consequential again, it’s well worth your time.

Shock and Awe is clearly trying to be a righteous, fact-driven tribute to the reporters who challenged the Iraq WMD narrative, and the material itself is important enough to deserve attention. The problem is that Rob Reiner stages it like a familiar “good journalists vs. bad machine” procedural, with lots of talking, explaining, and scene-to-scene momentum that rarely turns into real tension. If you want a taut political thriller, the pacing and clunky, on-the-nose dialogue may feel like homework rather than suspense, even with a solid cast doing their best. It’s best suited to viewers who care more about the message and the history than cinematic spark, and who don’t mind strong language and a few mild sexual situations.
