Private Life (2018)
Richard and Rachel, a couple in the throes of infertility, try to maintain their marriage as they descend deeper and deeper into the insular world of assisted reproduction and domestic adoption.
What people think about Private Life
Private Life is special because it treats infertility not as a melodramatic plot device, but as a lived reality—messy, funny in the way real life can be, and quietly devastating in the next breath. Tamara Jenkins directs with a novelist’s eye for detail, letting awkward appointments, family dinners, and late-night conversations build into an intimate portrait of marriage under pressure rather than a tidy inspirational arc. Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti are terrific together, finding humor and tenderness inside frustration and fatigue, while Kayli Carter brings a disarming, youthful sincerity that complicates everything in the most human way. It’s a talky, emotionally precise dramedy that may hit close to home (and it is candidly adult), but if you want something honest and deeply felt without being manipulative, this one stays with you.
Private Life is aiming for an unglamorous, painfully honest look at infertility and the way it can swallow a marriage, with Tamara Jenkins keeping things intimate, talky, and grounded in awkward real-life moments. The downside is that this narrow, domestic focus can feel small-scale and repetitive, and the film’s nervous humor and character tics may read as mannered rather than revelatory if you’re hoping for a bigger, more urgent dramatic statement. It’s also not the cozy “dramedy” some people expect—there’s frank sexual content, nudity, and plenty of raw frustration. Still, Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn are excellent at making the couple feel real, so if you’re up for a quiet, uncomfortable character study instead of a sweeping crowd-pleaser, it’s worth your time.
