Victor Crowley (2017)

Victor Crowley is the kind of horror-comedy that remembers why slashers were ever fun in the first place: it’s loud, gleefully nasty, and in on its own joke without winking so hard it breaks the spell. Adam Green stages the Honey Island Swamp like a greasy, moonlit playground for mayhem, where the dialogue keeps things buoyant just long enough for the next outrageously inventive burst of gore to land. Kane Hodder brings a hulking physicality that makes the monster feel mythic and immediate, while the film’s pace rarely lets the energy sag, even as it cranks the splatter to cartoonishly brutal heights. If you want subtle scares or realism, this isn’t your ride—but if you’re on the fence and craving an entertaining, crowd-pleasing slasher that treats excess as an art form, this one delivers.

Victor Crowley is trying to be a loud, splattery love letter to old-school slasher sequels, with Adam Green leaning into franchise in-jokes, swampy atmosphere, and Kane Hodder doing what he does best as an unstoppable brute. The problem is it often feels like it’s coasting on familiarity rather than building tension or giving the story a reason to exist beyond “more kills,” and the early setup (especially around the plane) can drag before the movie finds its groove. The humor is broad and repetitive, so if you’re not already on the Hatchet wavelength, it may come off as smug or unnecessary rather than fun. If you want inventive scares or a fresh take, skip it; if you want a quick, gory hangout with a recognizable slasher icon and a few crowd-pleasing moments, it’ll do the job.
