Hustlers (2019)

Hustlers is a slick, surprisingly soulful crime romp that plays like a modern fable about money—who has it, who wants it, and what it does to the people chasing it. Lorene Scafaria directs with a confident, neon-glossed pulse, balancing comedy and tension while keeping the story grounded in the bond between Destiny (a quietly affecting Constance Wu) and Ramona (Jennifer Lopez, magnetic and fearless in a performance that really does feel like a peak). It’s flashy without being empty, sharp about class and survival without turning into a lecture, and it builds its momentum with the satisfying snap of a heist movie even when it’s just two friends talking on a rooftop. Fair warning: the film is unapologetically adult—sexual content, drugs, and morally messy choices are baked into the world—but if you can meet it on that level, it’s wildly entertaining and more emotionally resonant than you might expect.

Hustlers wants to be a slick, female-driven crime dramedy about survival, friendship, and turning the system back on the guys who rigged it—and when it’s in that lane, it’s genuinely entertaining. Jennifer Lopez brings real star power and swagger, and the early stretch has energy, humor, and a surprisingly human bond at its center.
