Horizon Line (2020)
A couple flying on a small plane to attend a tropical island wedding must fight for their lives after their pilot suffers a heart attack.
What people think about Horizon Line
Horizon Line takes a deliciously simple nightmare—being trapped in a small plane over open water—and turns it into a lean, white-knuckle ride that knows exactly how to keep tightening the screws. Director Mikael Marcimain keeps the pace brisk and the tension tactile, letting you feel every improvised decision and every mile of sky as Sara and Jackson are forced to rely on nerve, luck, and the barest scraps of know-how. Allison Williams and Alexander Dreymon sell the escalating panic and stubborn grit without melodrama, while the film’s occasional “can you believe this?” turns add a pulpy, endorphin-rush fun to the survival setup. If you’re allergic to far-fetched escalations or get anxious with confined, high-stakes thrillers, it may be a lot—but if you want a compact adventure that plays like a roller coaster with a horizon for a finish line, it’s an easy ticket to punch.
Horizon Line is clearly aiming for a lean, survival-thriller rush: two people stuck in a worst-case scenario, forced to improvise in the air with a ticking clock. The problem is it rarely earns the tension it’s chasing, because the leads don’t spark much chemistry and the characters feel too thin for you to truly worry about them. As the set pieces escalate, the movie starts leaning on increasingly silly disaster logic and some unconvincing effects, which can pull you right out of the moment instead of tightening the suspense. If you can switch your brain off for a breezy, tropical “how are they not dead yet?” ride, it’s passable, but if you want grounded thrills, sharp dialogue, or believable stakes, this probably isn’t your flight.
