Kaabil (2017)

Kaabil takes a familiar revenge-thriller engine and charges it with something rarer: a tender love story and a hero whose vulnerability becomes his fiercest weapon. Hrithik Roshan delivers one of those performances that doesn’t ask for your sympathy so much as it earns your respect, finding quiet warmth in the romantic passages and a steely, almost frightening focus when grief turns into resolve. Director Sanjay Gupta keeps the vibe lean and pulpy in the best Bollywood way—big emotion, sharp tension, and set pieces that play like cat-and-mouse battles where sound and instinct matter as much as sight. It’s not for everyone, especially given its heavy subject matter and brutal violence, but if you can handle a darker, old-school melodramatic edge, it’s a gripping, heartfelt ride that sticks with you.

Kaabil is aiming for a gritty, emotional revenge thriller with a rare twist: a blind protagonist who has to outthink a corrupt system, and it genuinely wants you to feel the love story before it turns dark. Hrithik Roshan commits hard and the film has a few tense, stylish set pieces, but the plotting leans on big coincidences and convenient loopholes that can make the “thriller” part feel more like a contrivance than a clever plan. It’s also a heavy watch, with sexual violence driving the story and a bleak tone that doesn’t give you much breathing room. If you need tight, believable writing or you’re sensitive to assault-revenge narratives, this likely won’t be for you, even if you can appreciate the performances and the intent.
