24 Hours to Live (2017)
An assassin seeks redemption after being given a second chance at life.
What people think about 24 Hours to Live
24 Hours to Live takes a familiar “one last chance” premise and straps a ticking clock to it, turning Ethan Hawke loose in a lean, hard-driving action thriller that rarely lets you catch your breath. What makes it pop is the pulpy, sci-fi edge of its resurrection hook—less about lofty ideas than the grim momentum of a man trying to outrun his own past—while Hawke brings a weary, human bite that sells the redemption angle even when the world gets brutal. The vibe is gritty and nocturnal, full of sharp betrayals, close-quarters violence, and a propulsive pace that keeps the story moving when it could’ve sagged into routine. It’s not for everyone—this is very much R-rated, bloody, and blunt—but if you want a straight-ahead genre ride that’s watchable, tough, and powered by a committed lead performance, it earns its 24 hours.
24 Hours to Live is clearly aiming for a slick, high-concept redemption thriller: a burned-out assassin gets one last shot at doing the right thing, with a sci-fi “countdown” hook to keep the pressure on. The problem is the script leans hard on familiar genre beats and clunky dialogue, so the mystery/thriller side never feels as sharp as it wants to be, especially once the third act starts piling on noise instead of payoff. Ethan Hawke brings more grit and sincerity than the material deserves, and the action has moments of punchy urgency, but it often plays like a serviceable rental rather than a standout. If you’re here for a tight, clever sci-fi thriller, you’ll likely be underwhelmed; if you just want violent, R-rated, fast-moving revenge action with a decent lead, it may do the job.
