Colette is special because it turns a literary origin story into something alive, sensual, and defiant—less a dusty biopic than a bright spark catching in a room full of velvet, ink, and appetite. Keira Knightley gives Colette a quicksilver intelligence and a stubborn, hard-won dignity, while Dominic West makes Willy charming enough to understand and exasperating enough to resist, all under Wash Westmoreland’s brisk, elegant direction. The film luxuriates in its period detail—costumes, salons, stage lights—yet keeps an energetic, modern pulse as it follows an artist fighting to be seen and named on her own terms. It does include frank sexuality and a bohemian milieu that won’t be for every viewer, but if you like historical dramas with bite, beauty, and a heroine who refuses to stay in the margins, it’s an immensely satisfying watch.

Colette aims to be a glossy coming-of-age biopic about a woman clawing her voice back from a husband who profits off it, and it does that in a clean, accessible way. The catch is that it’s almost too well-behaved: for a life this complicated, the film often feels polished and conventional, sanding down the messier edges into something a bit tame. Keira Knightley is the main reason to show up—she gives Colette snap, wit, and quiet fury—even when the script settles for familiar beats instead of real bite. If you want a daring, psychologically thorny portrait of sexuality, art, and power, you may find it frustratingly safe; if you’re fine with handsome period drama that plays it smooth, it’s an easy watch.
