Sound of Metal (2020)

Sound of Metal is the rare drama that doesn’t just tell you what its hero is going through—it makes you feel it, using astonishing sound design to pull the floor out from under you and then slowly, patiently rebuild it. Riz Ahmed gives a fiercely alive performance as Ruben, a man whose identity is wrapped around volume and velocity, and the film watches him confront change with a rawness that’s never showy and never sentimental. Darius Marder directs with real restraint and respect, especially in the way the deaf recovery community is portrayed not as a “lesson,” but as a lived-in world with humor, discipline, and grace (Paul Raci is quietly wonderful). It’s not an easy watch if you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing music movie, but if you want something intimate, immersive, and deeply human, this one stays with you like a vibration in the chest.

Sound of Metal is clearly aiming for an intimate, humane look at identity, addiction recovery, and what happens when your “purpose” gets ripped away, and it mostly succeeds on that emotional level. The catch is that if you’re expecting a punchy music-drama arc or big story twists, the narrative is deliberately small, sometimes predictable, and a few convenient leaps in the plot may pull you out of it. It’s also a patient, inward film that spends more time on adjustment and discomfort than on catharsis, so viewers who need momentum might find it slow or repetitive. Still, Riz Ahmed is terrific, Paul Raci brings real warmth, and the sound design is so immersive it can feel like the movie’s main event—worth your time if you’re up for something quiet, raw, and character-first.
