What people think about Lou
Lou is the kind of lean, storm-lashed thriller that grabs you by the collar and never loosens its grip, powered by the sheer pleasure of watching Allison Janney turn quiet menace into full-blooded, believable toughness. Director Anna Foerster uses the raging wilderness like a second antagonist—wind, mud, and darkness pressing in—so every step of the pursuit feels earned, physical, and tense. Jurnee Smollett brings real emotional stakes to the chase, and the film’s momentum is brisk enough that it plays like a survival story as much as an action ride. It is violent and grim, and if you want a breezy crowd-pleaser this isn’t it—but if you’re in the mood for a hard-edged, atmospheric cat-and-mouse thriller anchored by a great lead performance, it’s absolutely worth the trip.
Lou is clearly aiming for a gritty, storm-soaked survival thriller where two women push past fear and exhaustion to get a child back, and that part mostly works on a basic, propulsive level. The problem is the script leans hard on familiar “mysterious neighbor with a past” beats, and the deeper it digs into its secrets, the more the plot starts to feel like a stack of action-thriller clichés rather than something earned. Pacing can get baggy once the chase turns into backstory, and the big reveals may strike you as more eye-rolling than jaw-dropping if you like your twists grounded. Still, Allison Janney brings real steel and credibility, so if you want a lean, violent, rain-lashed B-movie vibe and don’t mind a derivative setup, it’ll pass the time; if you’re expecting a smart, tightly written thriller, you may end up frustrated.
