Happy Death Day (2017)

Christopher Landon keeps the pace buoyant and bright even when the knife comes out, and the movie’s big secret weapon is Jessica Rothe, who makes Tree’s journey from sharp-edged cynic to determined survivor genuinely fun to watch. The tone is playful, energetic, and surprisingly crowd-pleasing, with a mystery engine that keeps you guessing while it winks at the genre’s rules. If you’re allergic to teen-comedy sass or don’t enjoy repeated on-screen deaths, it may not be your ride—but if you like your scares served with laughs and momentum, it’s an easy recommendation.

Happy Death Day is clearly trying to mash up a slasher movie with a Groundhog Day-style mystery, using the time loop as a playground for scares, jokes, and a bit of character growth. The problem is that the repetition can start to feel like you’re watching the same set-up with slightly different punchlines, and the whodunit elements lean pretty conventional rather than genuinely twisty or chilling.
