What people think about Dreamland
Dreamland is special because it turns a familiar outlaw tale into a dusty, aching coming-of-age fever dream, where desire and desperation blow through every frame like the Oklahoma wind. Miles Joris-Peyrafitte directs with a painter’s eye for storm-lit skies and hard-scrabble faces, making the Depression-era setting feel tactile and lived-in rather than postcard-pretty. Margot Robbie brings a dangerous, wounded magnetism that keeps you guessing, and Finn Cole matches her with a raw, impulsive energy that makes their chemistry feel less like a romance and more like a fuse burning down. If you’re in the mood for a stylish, adult-leaning drama-thriller that’s more atmosphere and moral tension than nonstop action, this one rewards you with mood, muscle, and a lingering aftertaste.
Dreamland wants to be a dusty, romantic outlaw fable about desperation, temptation, and the stories people tell themselves to escape hard times, and on paper that’s a great fit for the Dust Bowl setting. The problem is it often feels like it’s borrowing the mood and beats of better crime dramas without adding enough of its own spark, so the plot can drift and the themes about mythmaking never really land with much punch. If you’re expecting a tight, suspenseful thriller with real momentum, you may find it oddly slack and familiar despite the stakes. That said, the atmosphere is strong, Margot Robbie brings magnetism, and if you’re in the mood for a slow-burn period piece that prioritizes vibe over narrative drive, it can still be a decent watch.
