The Duelist (2016)

The Duelist is the kind of film that makes you sit up straight just to admire how confidently it conjures a world: misty Saint Petersburg mornings, candlelit salons, and dawn duels staged with a painter’s eye and a thriller’s pulse. It follows a cool, enigmatic marksman who “lives” by other men’s pride, and it turns each pistol-shot encounter into a tense little morality play, all while letting the lush period detail and crisp action do the heavy lifting. There’s a satisfying, old-fashioned swagger to it—part adventure, part drama, part elegant gunplay—yet it’s also surprisingly human in the way it hints at the cost of living by violence. If you’re allergic to stylized period melodrama, it may feel a touch operatic, but if you want riveting atmosphere and duels that crackle with suspense, this is a handsome, entertaining ride.

The Duelist is clearly aiming for a classy, darkly romantic period thriller, mixing high-society intrigue with dawn pistol duels and a brooding antihero who’s supposed to thaw just enough to keep you invested. The problem is it often plays like a greatest-hits collection of familiar tropes, with melodrama turned up high and a plot that keeps knotting itself into twists that feel more busy than clever. The pacing can be uneven too, so stretches of moody buildup don’t always pay off with satisfying momentum.
